Find Your Inspiration
Ways to Just Get Started Already
There is nothing more frustrating and intimidating than staring at a blank, white canvas or journal page. Here are some of my favorite ways to get past it and just get started...
*Glue down tissue paper, try crumpling it up first to create interest, could be just white. Or try colors or patterns.
*Slap on a coat of color, try one you wouldn't normally use
*Or how about a coat of black gesso
*Take a photo and use it as inspiration
*Look through an art book and pick a piece for a starting point (colors, composition or subject matter)
*Take an old, unloved or unfinished work, cut it up and glue down the pieces randomly
*Get inspired by a journal prompt or a favorite quote
*Or just randomly glue a few pieces of paper down to cover up some white. Some of my favorites are:
*Dress pattern paper
*A random book page, could be text or images
*Random magazine image
My All-Time Favorite Easy Supercool Backgrounds
I use these over and over again, you can make them look completely different with splashes of paint, glazes or ink pads.
*Distressed wrapping paper (I like to crumple it, glue it down, wait til it dries then sand it a bit)
*Crumbled tissue paper I prefer plain white, but you can also use something with a color or pattern)
*After you crumple it, you can either smooth it down or apply it with big folds and wrinkles
*Vintage text pages (try a foreign language book)
*Open a novel to any page. Use the first full sentence as a prompt.
*Write the alphabet down the left side of your page. Then think of a word that describes YOU for every letter.
*Get out your dictionary, choose a random page and take the first word on that page. Free associate.
*Flip through the nearest magazine and randomly choose an image. Glue it down.
